about

Adrian Lane about Water Wash Away the Waves:

"I always start an album with a mood or atmosphere I want to create, often something intangible that is hard to put into words, but I can imagine. This leads me to a sound palette that I choose to use for the album and a certain method of working. For this album I knew I wanted to do something that combined old and new technology, and lo-fi sounds with modern digital audio workstations. Key to the sound of the album were a 45-year-old synth, a hundred-year-old piano and perhaps most importantly an old mini-cassette Dictaphone. A variety of sounds, analogue and digital, were recorded into the Dictaphone, which was then re-recorded into the DAW, cut-up and arranged, which gives a very gritty quality. These sounds were also complemented with virtual instruments, some of which were ‘tape’ inspired themselves.

Usually, my music has quite a melancholy mood, but found myself writing much more in major keys, maybe as a contrast to the grittiness of the sounds. Most of my music is quite bucolic in theme and this album is no exception, with tracks inspired by walks in the countryside in my local environment and further afield (notably South Korea)."

Adrian Lane produces quiet, intimate neo-classical music that explores sounds from acoustic sources, mixed with electronic but organic sounding ones. The music feels acoustic, and employs a combination of age-old instruments (piano, violin, alto and baritone bowed psalteries, acoustic guitar, banjo, zither, glockenspiel) mixed with synthesizers and virtual instruments and constructed in a way that could only be achieved with modern technology. Adrian likes to tread the line between the real and the synthetic so that it is difficult for the listener to discern which is which.
